School Council

Our School Council provides opportunities for our learners to learn about effective self-government, develop good communication skills and take responsibility for social and community development.

Expectations of Learners:

• Be a role model for other learners in class.

• Attend weekly meetings.

• Have a voice and help other learners to have a voice with having discussions in class.

• Encourage other learners in class to use Earwig to make suggestions and receive feedback from school council meetings 

• Help make decisions to better the school.

The School Council is made up of elected members from each class across the school. They meet on a weekly basis, under the guidance of one of our Compassionate Schools Coaches, to consider issues raised by their peers through using our Earwig system.

Councillors are expected to assume a responsible role in support of their peers throughout the school day. The School Council looks at everyday aspects of the life of the school. It might also take on significant projects to bring about lasting improvement to the school – for example, there is a current initiative to develop the school grounds and for Quest to  acheive the silver Rights Respecting School Award.

The School Council is also invited to consider on how best to allocate donations to the school; sometimes these may be channelled into a school-based enterprise, while at other times the Council may consider forwarding the donation for the benefit of charity groups operating in a wider context for the good of a community.

Members of the School Council are also involved in the recruitment of new staff and have represented the school at a range of whole school events.

Membership of the School Council is a sought after aspiration, common to very many learners at Quest Academy. It promotes a ‘sense of belonging’ that we hope each learner shares with us. The positive contributions made by learners serving the School Council are recognised and celebrated by all those involved with Quest and they are rightly considered to be a vibrant and successful aspect of our community.

At the start of each academic year learners are given the opportunity to become a member of the School Council and /or the Equality Champions Team. In their first meeting the learners will discuss their priorities and formulate their long term plan. Please see the bottom of this page for the areas they addressed last year.

Rights Respecting Schools at Quest

At Quest we believe strongly that every child should have their rights respected at all times and we strive to make this a central focus of our learner’s education. We have acheived the Silver Rights Respecting Schools Award.

Equality Champions

• The role of an Equality Champion is to understand others and understand that everyone should be treated equally.

• The Equality Champion team will be learning about stonewall so that they can understand and teach others.

• Equality Champions also help to plan for different events that happen throughout the year, for example, LGBT+ and Black History Month.

Our Equality Champions work alongside our School Council focusing on how they can work together to support the school achieve the Silver Rights Respecting Award and the Stonewall Champion Award which focusses on the rights and impact of stereotyping different groups of people, for example, transgender.
